and cool tools + the AI Landscape in 2023

Do you remember ⚡Winamp’s slogan, or am I just that old? 😀

Meta was hit heavily in the stock market last year, but with their big bets on AI (Llama) and VR, would you bet against them now?

Meta, Meta, Meta…

We’ve covered how Big Tech is coming out with AI products at a crazy pace: from Bing & OpenAI, ChatGPT to Google’s Bard. One of the large players has been silent, until now.

Meta (parent company of Facebook) has revamped its AI team. It’s being unified into one, which is going to be led by VP Ahmad Al-Dahle, who spent 16 years at Apple before joining Meta in April 2020. Meta is hoping that by doing so, they can quickly integrate the latest tech into its products.

A few days ago, Meta LLaMA: A foundational, 65-billion-parameter large language model. This is Mark Zuckeberg’s answer to ChatGPT.

The tool right now isn't currently integrated into any of the company's public products, but will be available for researchers. Guillaume (Research Scientist at Facebook AI Research) explains more in detail in this tweet thread:

How hard Meta is doubling down on AI? Hard…They just announced that they are experimenting with AI-powered chat on WhatsApp and Messenger. I expect it will be similar to what we’ve seen in Gmail, or very recently in Twitter, where you are given “next best” responses to the text you just received.

I expect Meta to be a very big player in the AI world - not because of what they are doing is revolutionary, but because unlike others, they are sitting on a goldmine of locked data. As a “robot”, you can’t copy Facebook’s data easily (unlike most websites on the internet) and the same goes for WhatsApp messages.
